Welcome to the Tour de Millersburg
BAR Series, August 14 & 15, 2010
The Tour de Millersburg planning committee would like to extend our deepest thanks to everyone that contributed to the great success of the 2010 race weekend! From the cyclists to the volunteers to the sponsors to the officials to the host families you all made the 4th Annual Tour, the best one yet!
We increased our number of racers by 75 over last year! The weather on Saturday was overcast and nearly perfect for the Time Trial and the Criterium. Our luck on Sunday didn’t hold out, but the rain didn’t dampen our spirits, as we still had a great day of racing through the countryside in the Road Race!
With our sponsors help and the dramatic rise in the number of registered cyclists, we maxed out the prize purse for top men’s and women’s categories according to our USA Cycling race permit. Our preliminary estimate of the 2010 Tour’s proceeds that will be directed back into the community is in excess of $10,000. We have already awarded $1000 in Scholarships to Millersburg High School seniors attending college.
This event as a legacy of the 2007 Millersburg Bicentennial Celebration continues to bring the community together as volunteers, numbering over 140, host families, totaling more than 35 (housing over 110 cyclists!), and sponsors, contributing over $11,000, and spectators that come out to experience the racing!
The planning committee is proud to be residents of the Millersburg area and to show off our town’s hospitality. Close to 100% of the cyclist’s comments contain a sentence about how welcome they feel in Millersburg. Visit our comments page to see what they had say.
There are multiple indirect benefits to bringing nearly 400 visitors to Millersburg for a weekend. Economically speaking on average they spend money on a tank of gas, a meal or two, and a quarter of them booked a room for two nights. Conservatively, that adds up to $35,000 spent in our local community! This year we added a number of coupons to the racer’s goody bags. From these coupons they have become aware of the Ferry Boats, Lake Tobias and a number of local eateries. A number of entrants and their families have expressed an interest in coming back to the area throughout the year to explore more of what we have to offer.
Once again thanks to all that volunteered including the Special Olympics leadership team, intersection marshals, feed zone workers, vehicle drivers, motorcycle marshals, logistical support, radio coordinator, emergency medical providers, fire company, local and state police, bicycle repair, etc. This year’s top five sponsors were: Dauphin County Commissioners(Haste, Difrancesco, and Hartwick), Troutman’s Chevrolet / William C. and Dorothy T. Troutman Foundation (including Lykens Valley Golf Course, Shanks Bar & Grille, and the Lodge at Lykens Valley), Bolig’s Propane, Bradenbaugh-Hottenstein Trust, and Coleman’s Military Surplus. Thank you all so much!
We expect to once again distribute the proceeds to the community at the Tree Lighting in Market Square Park the day after Thanksgiving. Stay tuned for application instructions. This had been our best year by far, and we are looking forward to our 5th anniversary in 2011! See you all next year!
